ಹೆಸರಿನ ಇತಿಹಾಸ

  • Due to the fact that Davangere City is located about 15 Kilometers from bank of Tunga Badra river and predominantly border between two princely states before British Raj. Marchants from both states seems to be exchanging their merchandize or involved in Trading. Most predominantly cows, buffalos, cotton, kinds of rice (saajey, navaney). Elders still remember the kind of big lake towards north of Davangere, and stones prompting such existence of lake. Because of which some scholars belive that name Davangere came from "devana kere" means "gods lake". Another interpretation is "village of lake", but unable to derive "davan" for "village". There is also interpretation as "deva nagari" mean "city of gods".

But given the fact is stone carving dated 12 Century has clear names "Davangere" which mean from last 9 centuries, name has not changed.

In English city is spelled using many different ways but two are mostly common "Davangere" and "Davanagere", North Indian authors because of their hindi grammar call it as Devangiri , Devengere, Devangere and these are wrong.
